Smith Excels in Phoenix Win
|
Though the conditions were not ideal, the Phoenix Downs and Great Black Swamp Mud Hens came back from a rain delay to finish their game.
The Phoenix Downs defeated the Great Black Swamp Mud Hens, 9-4, at The Nest. Phoenix catcher Matt Smith was named player of the game for his superb performance. He went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Melvin Hoffman picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 3-3. Pablo Mejía was tagged with the loss.
The Downs got a big at-bat from second baseman Miguel Medellín. For the game, Medellín went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a walk. He scored 2 times. In the top of the seventh, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 23rd double of the season gave Phoenix a 5-4 lead.
"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Smith.
Phoenix is now 36-37, Great Black Swamp 34-39.
