Newcastle beat Great Black Swamp in a rain-soaked ballgame.

The House of Brews had to overcome a fine effort from Great Black Swamp pitcher Wally Johnson to grab a narrow 3-2 win at The Nest. Johnson went 8 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. The winner was Doug Grimes in relief. His record improves to 8-12. Bryan Hale took the loss. Cecil West was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 25 of 28 save opportunities.

The House of Brews got a big at-bat from right fielder Keith Lee. For the game, Lee went 2-4 with a double. In the top of the ninth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 21st double of the season gave Newcastle a 3-2 lead.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Newcastle skipper Paul Collins.

Newcastle now sits in third place in the Patriotic League Liberty Division at 67-72.
