Victory Pushes Nationals Record to 22-12
|
The Bakersfield Carcasses got a sterling performance from pitcher Scott Hanson, but the Nationals still prevailed, 2-1. Hanson was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 9 innings of 7-hit ball. Cy Young was the winning pitcher. Over 5.1 innings, he allowed 1 run on 3 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. The save was credited to Dennis Eckersley, his 8th.
It could have been a different outcome for Eastern, had it not been for Chuck Knoblauch, the 19-year old third baseman . Knoblauch contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to put Eastern up, 2-1.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Knoblauch. "And not try to do too much."
The first-place Carcasses have lost 9 straight games.
